LinkedIn…you have so disappointed me, but at least I’d like to direct folks how to “opt out”

Okay, LinkedIn, you went through with your IPO and all that not long ago, but hey…give us a break and PLEASE don’t become so much like Facebook already? Please?!?

Unfortunately, my friends, LinkedIn has gone the Facebook way of enacting new thingie-ma-bobs that you have to “opt out” of rather than actively enable. Social ads using the personal information of LinkedIn members seems to be the focus of their current bit of shenanigans, but this link explains how to opt out (and I DO recommend doing so!).

The Penny post has finally been made

I sincerely apologize for my lengthy absence from the site, but both grieving over having lost Penny in May and being very busy with my full-time job (which I continue to enjoy immensely) have led to a bit of silence here. This evening, however, I did write a very fitting post in honor of Penny on my personal blog, Fresh from the cobweb-laden corners of…wherever. I do hope that you get a chance to check it out.

Penny, in my heart you will always be a cat that no others can even come close to touching; it’s clear in the final photo that I took of you that your days were rapidly slipping away, but I love you so much that I want to share it with everyone:

Well…THAT whole experiment was, um, “interesting”

Needless to say, I definitely do NOT think that I’m a lover of any “social media” (more like social spam?) formats anymore at all…at least, not the ones that seem to serve absolutely no useful purpose at all. Currently, LinkedIn seems to be the sole site that I am still engaged in quite positively and have absolutely no complaints about. You may recall my rather unceremonious retreat from Facebook recently. I likewise gave Twitter the boot late last week and am feeling more digitally cleansed than I have in quite some time.

This is a good thing.   :-)

Oh, in case you didn’t see ZDNet’s offerings the other day about the FTC giving the green light for your Facebook happenings (up to 7 years of activity) to be shared during background checks made by future employers, you just might want to give this a read. I suspect that the folks who regularly end up being featured on Lamebook might have the most to fear, but just ask yourself if you are “okay” with this ruling in any way, shape, or form before you haphazardly share your next status update.

Penny, peace out

I wasn’t going to mention it here, as doing so is not too appropriate (I plan to post more about it, however, on my personal blog within the next few days), but I lost my beloved partner-in-crime last week…the day before my 40th birthday. Penny was the most awesome cat that anyone could ever hope to be blessed with; I adopted him the day that I officially began my graduate school studies, and he stood by me through thick and thin.

As I stated above, I will elaborate a bit more on Penny elsewhere. In his honor, I would like to share with you here a video that a very dear friend brought to my attention yesterday…and which brought a much-needed smile to this face, as well as elicited many laughs, during admittedly sad times. Enjoy!

A change to the Prilliman Projects site and Facebook presence (or, more precisely, lack thereof)

Essentially, the Facebook page for Prilliman Projects (which used to be linked here in the right-hand sidebar) no longer exists: I nuked it just prior to deleting my personal account there.

This decision was not made impulsively but, instead, was based on growing concerns about privacy and everything else that I personally consider Facebook to be threatening. The recent Google-smearing debacle conducted by their management was merely the icing on the cake for me. As a side note, it feels terrific to have such a source of incessant spam out of my life for countless other reasons, too!

For anyone else out there who might be interested in likewise unplugging at some point, there IS a difference between: (i) simply “deactivating” your account, and (ii) queuing it up for permanent deletion. It is almost impossible to find the information for permanent deletion via Facebook (no surprise, right?), but detailed instructions can be found here.

Some tasty food for thought regarding the decision to eradicate your Facebook account is provided in a recent article over at Business Insider, entitled “10 Reasons To Delete Your Facebook Account”; enjoy…but please don’t find yourself giving in to “10 Reasons You’ll Never Quit Facebook” (sorry, but it had to be said).

Visit my new online “space”…

…for lack of a better term.   ;-)

Although I reserved the specific URL several months ago in anticipation of using it for some purpose on down the road, it was only the other night that I decided to turn it into a blog featuring random bits of what I write (and even beyond that) with anyone who cares to visit Fresh from the cobweb-laden corners of…wherever at the aforementioned link. I toyed with the idea of posting some of my work on this site but decided that, at this point anyway, I would prefer to maintain my written pieces elsewhere. The new blog is very rough for now, but I do hope to turn it into something quite pretty.

A random update to teach “April Fools” a thing or two about apostrophes

Happy April Fools’ Day to everyone!

Seriously, though: please refrain from typing away on Facebook, Twitter, or elsewhere that (as I have personally witnessed more times than I care to remember) you and your friends are, after having fallen victim to one particular prank or another today:

Aprils Fools’ [sic]

This is just WRONG on so many levels…and subsequently a bit disturbing.   ;-)

To remedy the situation, I direct the potentially guilty to study “How To Use An Apostrophe” (which you can access by clicking the image below); it is yet another brilliant offering by The Oatmeal.

Prilliman Projects on Facebook

I am pleased to announce that, as of last night, the Facebook page for Prilliman Projects has received enough fan endorsements to be granted a simplified and customized URL there. Thank you all so much for the incredible support.

The username PrillimanProjects has been set for Prilliman Projects. Now you can direct your fans to facebook.com/PrillimanProjects

Feel free to hop on over and pay a visit!

EDIT 5/15/2011: There is no longer a Facebook presence for either myself or Prilliman Projects; please see this post for more information.

The Elements of Style: 50th Anniversary Edition (I want!!!)

By , September 26, 2010

Though I have a copy at the office of this wonderful mini-tome (and I flip through it daily to keep myself on track), I actually DO NOT have a copy on hand here at home!

Former Cornell University English professor William Strunk, Jr., is probably rolling over in his grave — though not in a negative fashion at all — considering that the little book he privately published in 1919 and which was subsequently published under an editor in 1935 remains an authoritative reference to this day.

As of 1999 (despite coauthor and former Strunk student, E.B. White, having passed on in 1985), the book currently stands at a 4th edition…and the lovely hardcover of The Elements of Style: 50th Anniversary Edition pictured at right contains just that. In the event that my lovely fiancé (a computer geek extraordinaire) is reading, getting a copy of this as my Christmas gift would be absolutely fantastic!      It is in stock here at Amazon.com…just sayin’.   ;-)

A “Just For Fun” category: inappropriate or refreshing? Let’s give it a whirl!

By , September 15, 2010

I have to admit that seeing far too many business sites stagnate from absolutely zero updates irritates me to no end; it is for this reason that I chose to establish the Prilliman Projects online presence in the context of a blog rather than a more static entity. I love to communicate in written form, and I think that anyone who might consider making use of my services appreciates seeing that I am both enthusiastic and interactive in my pursuits.

In any case…earlier tonight via the Prilliman Projects Twitter feed, I shared a hilarious (though true, and I dare those of you who disagree to voice your opinions here) link about fonts and their use (or, more appropriately, misuse). Please, let’s all do the world a tremendous favor and avoid Comic Sans at all costs!

For yet another amusing yet suitable (I think, anyway) link though, please click the image below to access “Ten Word You Need To Stop Misspelling” over at The Oatmeal (I love this guy’s stuff!). The page speaks for itself rather well, so I’m not going to even bother describing it here.   ;-)
